Chapter Five

Serena took a steadying breath. Families were so not her thing. She’d agreed to endure this dinner‒why? The only commitment she and Nick had made to each other was to have hot sex as soon as they could arrange a worry-free place. Heat suffused her body. Do not think of sex right now!

This was all Nick’s fault. Somehow he’d coerced her into coming here. He’d made having dinner with your parents sound like an ordinary thing to do on a Sunday afternoon. But it wasn’t ordinary. Not for her. It was torture. His parents were going to hate her. They’d know right away she was a misfit. She’d made a mistake letting Nick talk her into coming here.

Nick took her hand and squeezed it as they made their way through the empty hallway and to the kitchen. “Mom? Dad? We’re here.” He winked at her. “I learned the hard way not to surprise my parents. No telling what you might stumble into.”

Oh help, he looked so yummy when he laughed. “Nick, I…” She wiped a drop of sweat from her forehead. “I don’t think this is a good idea.”

He slipped his arm around her waist and nudged her closer to him. “They don’t bite. But I might.”

His dark brown eyes softened, his gaze focused on her mouth. Her temperature spiked. If they’d been alone, she had no doubt Nick would be kissing her to within an inch of her life right now. And she’d be letting him.

Someone cleared their throat behind her, and she tore her gaze away from Nick’s generous mouth. And blushed again. From her toes right up to her hairline. Without her realizing it, Nick had waltzed them into the kitchen. His parents stood by the sink, obviously trying to smother the smiles on their faces.

“Mom, Dad, this is Serena.”

His mother was a classic beauty with high cheekbones and clear brown eyes. Her dark hair, streaked with shots of pure white, was pulled into a smooth chignon. Nick kissed his mom on the cheek as he hugged her.

Serena kept her smile in place as she felt the familiar, cold ache that lodged in her chest every time she watched a family interact warmly. But when Nick turned to his father, who looked like an older version of him, and kissed him on both cheeks and hugged him, she lost a small part of her heart. Nick DeMarco was a loving and caring man. He’d make a wonderful family man someday.

And she was the worst candidate for mother of the year. Which was not an issue. They weren’t even dating.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Serena. I’m Maria.”

Serena took her hand, but instead of shaking it, Maria pulled her close and kissed first one cheek, then the other. “Don’t worry.” Maria smiled. “You’ll get used to our little idiosyncrasies. Welcome to our home.”

“Thank you.” She eyed Nick’s dad out of the corner of her eye. When he flashed the same flirtatious smile Nick had used on her countless times, she couldn’t help but laugh.
